About
The Airbnb rebrand (2014, by DesignStudio) introduced the Bélo symbol and repositioned the brand from "rent someone's spare room" to "belong anywhere." The brand evolution and the scale at which Airbnb has maintained visual consistency is a study in large-scale design systems, brand narrative, and the politics of belonging as brand language.
What to Study
- The Bélo: one of the most discussed logo redesigns of the 2010s; the symbol for belonging — and why it worked despite the initial mockery
- "Belong Anywhere" positioning: how a marketplace brand can have a genuine emotional proposition
- Design Language System (DLS): Airbnb's open-source design system; how to build a system at scale
- Cereal typeface: custom typeface commissioned from Dalton Maag; legibility-first with warmth
- Photography system: the shift from stock-feeling to authentic; how photography guidelines shape brand perception
- Community & critique: the brand's use of "belonging" and community language alongside systemic racism and discrimination in the marketplace — a case study in the limits of brand narrative
Aesthetic DNA
Warm clarity. The brand's palette — Rausch red, warm grays, white — creates a sense of welcome without straying into kitsch. Photography is the primary brand vehicle. The Bélo is simple enough to be drawn from memory, which was the brief.
