Before internet and social media backlash was a thing, the San Francisco Municipal Railway experienced some serious backlash when, in 1996 — which to me sounds like not too long ago but that in reality is nearly 30 years ago — the General Manager at the time, Emilio Cruz, thought it would be a good idea to replace the already iconic “worm” logo designed in 1974 by none other than Walter Landor with a winged logo designed by Kirsten Stewart, a student at the Academy of Art College, as part of a class project and would have been paid $5,000 had the Public Transportation Commission approved it. It didn’t.
