2008Commercial Type
New York / London. Paul Barnes + Christian Schwartz. Originally split off from Schwartz's earlier work for Font Bureau. Commercial Type is the foundry behind Publico, Druk, Caponi, Marr Sans, Founders Grotesk — a who's-who of magazine and editorial type since 2008.
Distinguishing trait: deep historical literacy. Schwartz revives lesser-known 19th and early-20th-century specimens (Caslon, Bureau Grot, Antique types) without nostalgia, building functional contemporary families that still carry their lineage. Anyone designing editorial work studies Commercial Type for the same reason classical pianists study Bach.
