2005Klim Type Foundry
Wellington, NZ. Founded by Kris Sowersby. Klim is what happened when one of the technically-gifted young designers of the post-Hoefler generation decided to build slowly and ship few, exceptional families. National, Tiposcrito, Söhne (the typeface that quietly took over indie tech branding 2018-2024), Pitch, Calibre. The studio's website is itself a master class in editorial typography — read it.
Why it's load-bearing: when a contemporary brand identity feels confident and unfussy and you can't quite tell what's doing the work, it's frequently a Klim face. Studying their specimens teaches restraint without austerity.
