Free for the Asking
Here is a story of rags to riches (or of some other metaphor of going from nothing to something): Caleb Nugent, a designer in Grants Pass, OR, began an Instagram series where he would let Google Earth pick a company in his town for him to redesign for fun. In the comments section of one of those, a company with the Instagram handle @Brisbane that promotes other businesses in Brisbane, Australia asked Caleb to now “Do Brisbane!”. He didn’t but @Brisbane kept at it and Caleb eventually did do Brisbane. For free, for fun. A few months later the account gladly took his proposal and invited him over to visit. Although I’m not sure if there were any other dealings behind the scenes, this seems like an okay outcome despite what was basically asking for spec work but they at least did
