Some bold typography across three packaging projects this week, with work from Sherbrooke, Phoenix, and Amsterdam. Umano by Studio Miles Umano, based in Sherbrooke, Québec, offers a wide selection of organic and fair trade products, including spices, dried fruits and nuts, chocolate, and coffee, all with an earth- and human-conscious approach. The packaging, designed by local firm Studio Miles, leads with a joyful, extra bold wordmark that, while drawn through some strict geometry feels remarkably loose and has a warmth to it that is hard to pinpoint. (It’s also a dramatically positive improvement over the old logo that, well, yeesh.) Supporting the logo is a playful drawing of a hand that serves triple duty: as a groovy, gradient background on the label; as a seal on the jars; and as a potential mascot when eyes are added to it (seen at the project link). On the labels, the hand gets a little lost as the gradients are too subtle but they still add a nice texture and the supporting typography, utilizing VC Nudge, is a solid complement. See full project Bad Hambres by Cactus Country Bad Hambres is a very niche product of frozen bean and cheese burritos, offering only three flavor variations, created by a husband and wife team in Arizona, where their brand has sold like gangbusters. The packaging, designed by Phoenix, AZ-based Cactus Country, is a robust evolution of the company’s original that had already introduced the checkered pattern and a flared sans serif logo, both of which have been subtly refined and complemented by a cavalry of additional marks, typographic badges, and spot illustrations that add as much texture as there is inside the fresh-made tortillas from La Purisima, a local Mexican bakery. They had me at “Bad Hambres” and these look seriously good.
