In 1946, the newly nationalized Czechoslovak film industry was looking to establish itself on the world stage. The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) was initially conceived as a non-competitive showcase for local and international films in the picturesque spa town of Karlovy Vary, Czechia. It didn’t take long for the event to evolve into a prestigious juried competition: by 1956 it was already being considered one of the premiere film events in Central and Eastern Europe and earned accreditation from the International Federation of Film Producers Associations.
