The Elephant in the Return Address

The Wyoming Republican Party has sent a cease-and-desist letter to the Committee for Better Sheridan County Leadership (CBSCL) that has been using the Republican’s well-known elephant symbol as part of their return address in their mailers — you can see a blurry picture of it here. The elephant logo is officially a trademark owned by the Republican National Committee and is subject to the same laws that govern any other logo, whether it’s Nike’s or Apple’s. This, however, seems to be lost on the legal counsel for the CBSCL who claims they CAN use the logo and that the cease-and-desist request infringes on their right to free speech and that they will continue to use it, thank you very much, and will counter-sue Wyoming Republican Party if they keep bugging them abou
