A Swift Resolution

Late last year, Cathay Home — a manufacturer and distributor of premium textile products and home solutions sold through retailers like Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, and Nordstrom — filed a trademark application with the USPTO for “Swift Home”, a line of bedding products. Earlier this year, Taylor Swift’s company TAS Rights Management LLC filed an opposition citing the similarities of the cursive “Swift” to Taylor’s signature that is regularly used in her merchandise will cause confusion, making people think these would be Taylor Swift products. Cathay, perhaps smartly, abandoned the application — in part because it had not used the logo anywhere yet and in part because do you really want to go up against Taylor’s lawyers?
