Some funky typography this week, with work from Jakarta, Montréal, and Oslo. Kyō by Andrea Reza Kyō is a family-owned coffee shop located in a residential neighborhood in Jakarta, Indonesia, with dine-in options, pastries, and, naturally, coffee. The identity, designed by local designer Andrea Reza, revolves around an unconventional, lovingly-textured wordmark that is quite unique. Placing the bottom of the ascender of the “y” on the baseline is kind of a big short circuit in terms of traditional typography but I love how it’s so well balanced thanks to the diacritic macron over the “o”, making all three letters line up at the top and bottom.
