Dating back to 1999 the PRO14, as it had been known since the 2017 – 18 season, is an annual rugby union competition involving professional teams from Ireland, Italy, Scotland, South Africa, and Wales. Last week, the organization announced that it would change its name to United Rugby Championship this September when it kicks off the 2021 – 22 season as the top clubs from South Africa (Cell C Sharks, DHL Stormers, Emirates Lions and Vodacom Bulls) combine with the Guinness PRO14 to create a 16-team league representing some of the best rugby teams from the northern and southern hemispheres.
