Established in 1950, King’s Hawaiian is a popular brand of sweet rolls (bread) in the United States. Originally founded by Robert R. Taira as Robert’s Bakery, a tiny business in Hilo, Hawaii, its Hawaiian sweet breads quickly gained a following, leading to opening a bigger bakery in the bigger island of Honolulu on King Street, which lead to the name we know today. Increased popularity took Taira’s breads to the mainland and in 1970 it opened a 24,000-foot bakery in California. Today, still owned by the Taira family, King’s Hawaiian has three manufacturing plants, over 1,000 employees, and is ubiquitous in grocery stores around the country.
