Completed in 1989, La Grande Arche de la Défense is a monument and building in the business district of La Défense in Paris, France. It was conceived by Danish architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen as a response to an architectural competition held in 1982 for which he proposed an open cube as a window to the world — the final design and construction was completed by French architect Paul Andreu after Spreckelsen resigned from the job. The Grande Arche is in the approximate shape of a cube with a width, height, and depth of 110 m (360 ft) and houses government offices across 35 floors on two of its sides, combining for more than 80,000 square meters (262,000 square feet) of office space.
