Jerry Greenfield, one half of the delicious and socially conscious Ben & Jerry’s ice cream brand, has quit the company he co-founded due to the lack of freedom of speech (and freedom of action) they were promised when they sold to Unilever in 2000 — the acquisition agreement guaranteed the company’s autonomy and freedom to pursue its social mission, both of which have been stifled slowly over the years. As Unilever prepares to spin off its ice cream portfolio under the new corporate umbrella of Magnum Ice Cream Company, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield asked — in an open letter to the new company — for Ben & Jerry’s to be spun off too but it doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen.
