Created in 1896, Tabasco is one of the most famous hot sauces in the world, labeled in 36 languages and dialects, sold in over 195 countries and territories, added to soldiers’ rations, and put on restaurant tables around the globe. Made in Avery Island in South Louisiana from red peppers by Edmund McIlhenny, a banker, food lover, and avid gardener, the sauce was initially packaged in small cologne-type bottles and today’s bottles remain very close in silhouette to those early samples.
